What to Do If Your Home Was Broken Into?

We know having your home broken into is a traumatic experience. If you do however, experience a home thief, here are the steps to take with your insurance agency, so you can start moving forward as soon as possible.

Step 1 – Call the Police

The first thing you need to do before calling the insurance agency is call the police. After the police are notified, wait for officers to arrive and handle the situation.

Step 2 – Take inventory

The next thing you need to do is take inventory. The police will put in their report what is missing and the insurance agency will need it for their claim as well. When you make your inventory list of what is missing, it should included the following:

  • Description of the item
  • Make, model or serial number if applicable
  • Appraisals or cost at the time of purchase
  • Where the item was purchased
  • Date of purchase
  • Receipts or photos in an attachment, if relevant
  • Estimated replacement cost of the item

Step 3 – Call your insurance agency

When it is safe to enter your house, look around to see what has been stolen or damaged. Make a preliminary list and where possible, take pictures of the damages. Don’t throw out damaged property without the police knowing and telling your insurance company.

Who is covered in a theft?

People listed under your policy will also have their personal possessions covered against home theft. This includes your spouse, children, or anyone else identified on the policy, and extends to people living in different residences.

When will my damages be fixed?

If you filed a claim, your insurance company will often send an insurance adjuster out to assess the damage and recommend an auto body shop where you can have your repairs done.

If you experience a home theft, your homeowners insurance will cover stolen items up to your policy limits. Damage to the house that occurred during the robbery, such as broken windows, should be covered as well.
